Heat a medium saucepan on a medium heat and cook onion, bacon and garlic for a couple of minutes, stirring frequently until onion is transparent. There is no need to add any oil to the saucepan as any bacon fat will grease the saucepan.
Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, wholegrain mustard and water to the saucepan. Stir to combine and allow the mixture to simmer gently for approximately 5 minutes until the sauce has reduced and thickened slightly.
Add beans and mushrooms and simmer for a further couple of minutes until beans are heated through and mushrooms have just cooked.
Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil.
Serve with toast and eggs, sausages or bacon.
