Absolute simplicity is all that’s needed to describe this Choc-Orange Cake. Measure out the ingredients and throw them all in together in one bowl, it can’t get much easier … it also makes washing up a breeze. I love the hint of orange that gives this cake a beautiful citrusy flavour. Here are a couple of tips to ensure you have success with this recipe:
- Make sure you line both the base and sides of the cake tin to prevent the sides and top of the cake from drying out.
- If possible, use a light coloured cake tin rather than a dark/black one. Dark coloured baking tins tend to absorb and reflect more heat potentially leading to the sides of cakes being crusty or burnt looking.
- Line the sides of the cake tin with baking paper that extends at least one inch above the sides of the tin. This protects the surface of the cake from drying out while cooking.

Author: Mrs Organised
Ingredients …
- 1 ¼ cups self-raising flour
- 1 cup castor sugar
- ⅓ cup cocoa
- ½ teaspoon bi-carbonate soda
- 1 ½ tablespoons orange zest
- ⅔ cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- ⅓ cup orange juice
- Icing:
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 3 tablespoons dark chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon hot water
- ½ cup icing sugar, sifted
Method …
- Preheat oven to 180C (fan-forced). Lightly spray a 20 cm cake tin with cooking spray and line the sides and base with baking paper. Allow the baking paper to extend approximately one inch above the side of the cake tin.
- Combine all ingredients in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat for a couple of minutes on a low speed to combine the ingredients, then increase the speed to medium for approximately 3 minutes or until the mixture is smooth and has changed colour slightly and lightened.
- Pour mixture into the prepared cake tin and bake for approximately 45 minutes.
- Remove cake tin from oven and allow to stand for 5 minutes. Lift cake from tin, remove the baking paper and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the icing, melt the butter in a small saucepan over a very low heat.
- Remove the saucepan from the stove, add the dark chocolate chips and stir until melted and combined with the butter.
- Add the hot water to the chocolate mixture and stir to combine.
- Gradually add the icing sugar, stirring to combine until smooth.
- Spread a layer of the icing over the top of the cake surface.
